[photos]: Snake spotted in the toilet at 3am in satellite town Lagos

It is now a "to be careful" situation on how secured our homes are for a poisonous and tensed SNAKE was spotted in the toilet today in satellite town Lagos.

The following statement was made by one of the household   "It was about 3am this morning,I got up from my bed to urinate only for me to find a scarring snake lying right in front of me in my toilet. I was shocked, immediately I rushed out of the toilet to alert everyone of what I saw. "This was very unusual and was the first time I had come across such animal",we equipped ourselves with what we could reach out to quickly, went back to the room where the toilet was to kill the unwanted visitor".

According to Mr Tony this incident took place around 3am this morning and lasted for about 4hours.
Finally the snake was killed after various strikes and nobody was injured or bitten.

What would you have done if you were in that position?
Are we save?

Halima Abubakar insists she's not interested in marriage, says it's overrated

Is it really? I don't think so...I think it's a beautiful thing if you find the right partner but the actress thinks it's not and says she has no immediate plans to be a Mrs, as there's no happiness or genuine love these days. Speaking with Encomium magazine, she said;
Marriage has been overrated. It’s unnecessarily over rated. It’s just too much of headache with how things are now. Even ordinary relationship is a huge burden, huge headache and heartbreaking, let alone marriage. When you can’t stand each other as boyfriend and girlfriend, how would you live together under the same roof when you get married?
People need to know themselves seriously. When I say seriously, I mean spiritually before getting married. People only know themselves physically, not spiritually, so they end up getting bored with each other. And they will say they don’t want to get divorce because of what society would say after investing so much on the marriage.
They stay in that marriage and later it may become very irritating and they start fighting. Before they know it, everything becomes violent. You hear people say all sorts of things. You’re the one who allowed people to get to you and start telling you you’re getting old. You’re the one allowing them to convince you that you’re getting old, you need to get married. Everyone will surely get old. Who won’t get old? So, when people say I am getting old, get married, I would tell them that’s the only thing they know. People carry marriage like a flag.
Asked if it means she's not going to get married, she said;
No, people should only try to be nice about marriage to make me interested in it. Don’t tell me actresses don’t stay in marriage. Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva have been married for long and they’re still in the marriage. Nothing happened to their union. Omotola and her husband have been married for long; they’re still very much together. She got married at a young age which is good. What I am trying to say is that going into marriage needs a lot; you don’t just go into it. My elder sister got married at 26 and she’s doing fine in the marriage with her husband. Now, tell me why won’t I want a family like that? But these days, people are just too much into social media, that’s why marriages are crashing. Marriage these days is not based on happiness and genuine love. Let me ask, who is that poor person that has married a billionaire son? So, why won’t marriage crash when it’s not based on happiness and genuine love?

Actress Lena Dunham slams Kanye West over his 'Famous' music video, calls it sickening!

Film creator and writer Lena Dunham in a long Facebook post criticized Kanye West's 'famous' music video calling it sickening and saying that the video is inspired by aspects of culture that makes women feel unsafe in their bodies. Lena wrote;
Like many pop culture addicted Americans, I wait with bated breath for what Kanye West will do next. Aside from his Twitter mayhem, he has created some really "next level shit" as the kids would say. I could also happily watch Kim Kardashian West chip the paint off a window ledge for hours and be fascinated. I admire that whole family, love the way they depict women as better in numbers and masters of their own destiny.
I'd spend all summer at Kamp Kardashian. But it's possible to hold two competing thoughts in your mind and the Famous video is one of the more disturbing "artistic" efforts in recent memory.

Let's break it down: at the same time Brock Turner is getting off with a light tap for raping an unconscious woman and photographing her breasts for a group chat... As assaults are Periscoped across the web and girls commit suicide after being exposed in ways they never imagined... While Bill Cosby's crimes are still being uncovered and understood as traumas for the women he assaulted but also massive bruises to our national consciousness... Now I have to see the prone, unconscious, waxy bodies of famous women, twisted like they've been drugged and chucked aside at a rager? It gives me such a sickening sense of dis-ease.

I was raised in the art world by a dad who painted aggro scenes of sexuality and war and a mom who, ironically enough, has photographed some butt naked life-sized dolls of her own. I live for the nude rabble rousing of Carolee Schneemann and Hannah Wilke, for Kathy Acker's arty porn, for Paul McCarthy's gnomes with butt plugs and Vito Acconci masturbating under the gallery floor and Carrie Mae Weems shedding a blinding light on the pleasures and terrors of black womanhood. If it's been banned, I'll probably love it. Because I know that art's job is to make us think in ways that aren't always tidy or comfortable. But this feels different.
I'm sure that Bill Cosby doll being in the bed alongside Donald Trump is some kind of statement, that I'm probably being trolled on a super high level. I know that there's a hipper or cooler reaction to have than the one I'm currently having. But guess what? I don't have a hip cool reaction, because seeing a woman I love like Taylor Swift (fuck that one hurt to look at, I couldn't look), a woman I admire like Rihanna or Anna, reduced to a pair of waxy breasts made by some special effects guy in the Valley, it makes me feel sad and unsafe and worried for the teenage girls who watch this and may not understand that grainy roving camera as the stuff of snuff films. I hesitated a lot about saying anything cuz I figured the thinkpieces would come pouring in. But I didn't see this angle being explored as much as I had hoped. It's weird to feel like you're watching alone. I bet I'm not.

Here's the thing, Kanye: you're cool. Make a statement on fame and privacy and the Illuminati or whatever is on your mind! But I can't watch it, don't want to watch it, if it feels informed and inspired by the aspects of our culture that make women feel unsafe even in their own beds, in their own bodies.

Y'all, I'm so sick of showing up to the party angry. But at least I brought cake.

Dear Parent, Check Out Top 6 Reasons Why Your Child May Be Falling Behind In Class. (No.4 Will Surprise You)

Yesterday we shared the top 8 reasons why your child should be good at mathematics at a very early age (click here to read).  Now we will be focusing on top 6 reasons why your child may be falling behind in class. Wherever there is a child struggling to gain his/her ground in school, the odds are there are parents are also struggling to figure out how to find the most effective help for that child.
Nigeria’s No.1 academic solutions provider PREPCLASS has come up with top 6 reasons why it is very important you do all it takes to put your child ahead above peers in this highly competitive system..

1.       Assimilation Rate:A child who is being taught above his/her learning pace will end up missing out on a bulk of important details.
2.       Timid and shy children have a huge tendency of falling behind in class as this will prevent them from participating in engaging class routines such as asking questions when confused.
3.       Learning disorders such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and ADHD.  45% of children are not even properly diagnosed due to negligence from the teacher/parent.
4.       88% of children within ages 5-12 require after class support. Children of this age range require continuous supervision and revision to enable them fully understand previous concepts before proceeding to the next.
5.       The Fear of a Subject Teacher:Research shows that children who do not like a certain subject teacher perform poorly due to poor interpersonal relationship with the said teacher
6.       Some children have little or no passion for learning.
Have you noticed average, poor or declining results in your child’s academics?
Are you always quiet when other parents discuss their kids great performance?
Are you one of those parent that comes back home sad after attending the price giving ceremony at their child’s school?
You need to quickly get a solution before your child matures and it becomes impossible to fix.
What is the solution?
You have tried so hard to teach him/her yourself but you are frustrated with the outcomes and your 8-6 job is giving you no time to attend to it.
Do you know that there areexperienced teachersin every possible area that have worked with children with different academic challenges only for them to become geniuses and gurus after 6 months?
Have you heard of Prepclass (a teacher recruitment company featured in Forbes, CNN, BellaNaija, Fastcompany and many times here on LIB) they are the easiest solution to your current challenge.
Did you know that they can get you a verifiedteacher/tutor with exceptional teaching skills to come teach your child 3 times a week for the next 6months and your child would attain the greatness he/shedeserves?
Why not give them a call now on01-2913970 or 08059811502and request for a professional tutor

Argentina football legend Maradona pleads with Lionel Messi not to retire from international football

adona has pleaded with country man and current Argentina captain Lionel Messi not to retire from International football following Argentina's Copa America Centenario final loss to Chile.

After losing his fourth final for his country - after the World Cup two years ago and the Copa America in 2007 and 2015 - an emotional Messi said: 'That's it. It's over for me with the national team. But Maradona has urged the Barcelona man to think carefully about his future.

'Messi has to stay in the national team. He will go to Russia in form to be world champion,' Maradona told Argentine daily La Nacion. He has to rely more on boys who can help take the team forward and less on those who say they have to go. Those who are saying he should quit are doing it so that we won't see what a disaster Argentine football has become.'
Messi's plan to retire comes as the Argentine Football Association (AFA) implodes after the AFA's presidential election was recently marred by controversy and uncertainty.

 Maradona added:

'I am very sorry and very angry with what is happening to Argentine football. We hit bottom, we reached the bottom.'

21-year-old student sentenced to life in prison for killing her newborn baby by throwing her in the trash

Former college student who gave birth in her sorority house last year was on Monday, June 27, sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing the newborn by throwing her in the trash.

Emile Weaver, 21, of Clarington was found guilty by a jury last month of aggravated murder, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence.
Prosecutors said Weaver gave birth in a bathroom at the Delta Gamma Theta sorority at Muskingum University on April 22, 2015, then purposefully caused the death of her baby.

The baby girl died from asphyxiation after Weaver put her in a plastic trash bag and left the bag outside the sorority house.

Weaver testified at trial that she had been in denial about the pregnancy and thought the baby was already dead when she put the newborn in the trash bag. She tearfully apologized in court and said she will appeal the sentence.

Judge Mark Fleegle could have sentenced Weaver to life with a chance for parole in as little as 20 years, which was requested by her attorney, but the judge said he wasn't convinced she was remorseful.

Fleegle referred to text messages from Weaver sent afterward to the man she thought was the baby's father that said, "No more baby," followed by "taken care of."

Prosecutors said at trial that Weaver knew she was pregnant all along and engaged in risky behaviors like drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana, and playing in a dodgeball tournament because she never intended to keep the baby.

Weaver wrote in a letter to Fleegle before her sentencing that she didn't fully comprehend her actions until she was staring at the body of the baby, who was named Addison, in a tiny casket at her funeral.

"I ask God for forgiveness, and today, all I can do is ask for all of yours," she said in court.

At the beginning of the trial, Weaver had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but the judge ruled that she was mentally competent.

Muskingum County Prosecutor D. Michael Haddox said he was satisfied with the sentence.

"We believe justice has been served as best as humanly possible," he said.

One of 2 Texas sisters fatally shot by their mom was supposed to get married 3 days after shooting

A Texas Woman, 42-year-old Christy Sheats, gunned down her two daughters Taylor Sheats, 23, and her 17-year-old sister Madison on Friday evening over a family dispute and it's now been revealed that Taylor was supposed to wed three days after her killing.

A police officer fatally shot the mother around 5 p.m. on Friday after arriving to the family’s subdivision to find Sheats shooting at one of her daughters in the street.

Taylor and her longtime boyfriend had set their wedding date for Monday, according to a Facebook post from his relative cited by KTRK-TV.

“Y'all were a part of our family and that will never change,” the relative wrote. “The greatest in-laws anyone could ever have, and the sweetest, most wholesome and caring girls in my life. I look up to ya'll so much. Y'all were a light in the midst of this crazy world. We will all love you two until the end of time.”

The mom called the family meeting on Friday with her two daughters and her husband, Jason Sheats, 45, and then took out her gun and shot the two women, according to the sheriff’s office.

The mother had posted on Facebook in the months leading up to the shooting about her support for gun ownership rights and how much she loved her daughters.

Chelsea Handler opens up about having two abortions in the same year at the age of 16

In a Personal Essay for Playboy titled 'My Choice', Comedian and former TV host Chelsea Handler uses past experiences from her life to illustrate the importance of access to abortion. She opened up about having two abortions in one year after being impregnated by the same guy - who she was not supposed to be having unprotected sex with. According to her, 'getting unintentionally pregnant more than once is irresponsible, but it’s still necessary to make a thoughtful decision.' Read her essay after the cut...

When I got pregnant at the age of 16, getting an abortion wasn’t the first idea that popped into my unripened brain.

I was going through a very bad stage in my life. I hated my parents and I was having unprotected sex with my boyfriend, who was not someone I should’ve been having sex with in the first place, never mind unprotected sex. I wasn’t really playing with a full deck of cards, and when I got pregnant I just thought, Why not? I can have a baby. Maybe I’ll have twins and give them rhyming names! Of course, the idea that I would have a child and raise it by myself at that age, when I couldn’t even find my way home at night, was ridiculous. My parents recognized that, so they acted like parents for one of the very first times in my life and took me to Planned Parenthood. I felt parented, ironically, while I was getting an abortion. And when it was over, I was relieved in every possible way.

And I didn’t have just one abortion; I had two in the same year, impregnated by the same guy. I didn’t have the money the second time. I had to scrape together the $230 to pay Planned Parenthood, but it was a safe abortion. Getting unintentionally pregnant more than once is irresponsible, but it’s still necessary to make a thoughtful decision. We all make mistakes all the time. I happened to fuck up twice at the age of 16. I’m grateful that I came to my senses and was able to get an abortion legally without risking my health or bankrupting myself or my family. I’m 41 now. I don’t ever look back and think, God, I wish I’d had that baby.

Like millions of women, I can live my life without an unplanned child born out of an unhealthy relationship because of Roe v. Wade. It’s infuriating to hear politicians make bogus promises about overturning this ruling that has protected us for more than 40 years. It’s infuriating to hear them pander to the Christian right with promises they have no chance of keeping. (By the way: Even if there is a God, I highly doubt he wants everybody to go through with their pregnancies.) And it’s even more infuriating to watch politicians find ways to subvert Roe v. Wade, passing lesser laws that close clinics or restrict abortion access for women. At least five states—Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming—currently have only one clinic left within their borders.

But despite all that, I don’t buy that Roe v. Wade is in danger. We’re too far ahead of the game. Once you go forward in history, you don’t go backward. That would be like the government saying, “Okay, we’re taking away your right to vote too.” You can’t introduce a black person and be like, “Oh, I just got a slave!” That era is over. It’s similar to what’s happening in Mississippi and some other states with gay-marriage discrimination—marriage equality is going to take. You can’t stop that. We’ve already made the decision, and now we’re moving on to transgender rights. And it’s a wrap on men deciding what women can do with their bodies.

I doubt this is something America will ever agree on. Again, it’s like racism and sexism: People will be racist if they’re innately built that way, but whether they can act on their racism or not is a separate issue. There are people who think women shouldn’t hold high-powered positions, or who think Obama is Muslim, and it’s okay for them to have those thoughts; they just can’t act on them in a civilized society. It’s okay if you think it’s not right for women to have abortions—but it’s not your problem, because we decide.

We have 7.3 billion people on this planet. Anybody who carefully decides not to become a parent—let alone a bad parent, which is what I would have become—should be applauded for making a smart and sustainable decision.

I’d love for somebody to try to tell me what to do with my body. I dare them.

Death of Kano student in India: The untold story - By Salihu Tanko Yakasai

Read Salihu's piece below...
It is often difficult to put forward facts and figures or advance reasons when emotions are high. This is even more so when a serious and solemn event like death has been used to appeal to sentiments and achieve a target. It is the situation we found ourselves in Kano with the death in India of a Kano State student, Jibril Abubakar Jibril.

Jibril was, until his death, studying Pharmacy at the Bapuji Pharmacy College in, India, on Kano state Government scholarship.

While it was indeed painful seeing how tempers were whipped high by some people whose target is actually not sympathy for the deceased’s family or even the suffering of the late student prior to his death, but rather using the unfortunate incidence for certain ends, one still felt the need for restrain to let tempers calm before setting the records straight.

The first and very important information on the travails of the deceased student that was conveniently ignored by hate mongers is that late Jibril was actually involved in a fatal road accident in India while travelling very late at night on April 4, 2016. It was not only him. His fellow student, Usman Safiyanu Jaafar was on him during the ill-fated journey.

However, while Usman Jaafar sustained mainly bruises that were treated and he was discharged immediately, Jibril was not as lucky. He sustained serious neck injuries that required surgery. And because of the cordial relationship between the school and the Kano State government, Jibril’sschool did not waste time in taking care of him while they contact the government.

The government’s link man in India, the consultant that is like the guide of all our students there immediately sent an email to the Scholarship Board and other government figures. He broke the sad news and informed the authorities here that a relative of Jibril also on scholarship in the same institution had signed a consent form for an immediate surgery. The consultant equally attached another form for Jibril’s father back in Kano to sign for further work to continue.

The uncle of the student was then called to the Scholarships Board where he was briefed on the sad development and the consent form was presented to him. The duly signed form was then posted back to India.

However, because of the medical report the government received and the critical nature of the student’s condition, and after Governor AbdulllahiUmar Ganduje was briefed about the situation, the state government promptly sponsored two members of his family – his mother and a brother to travel to Bangalore to look after him.

The state government also requested that Jibril be given the best care he could get and that was how he was transferred to the best hospital in Bangalore despite the doctors saying his survival chances was just about 10 percent.

The governor directed the Executive Secretary of the Scholarships Board to keep tab of development around the patient and keep him abreast of developments as they unfold. The Scholarship Board was therefore on daily contact with the doctors in India, the college’s principal, Jibril’smother and the consultant who was monitoring everything. On days his condition warranted, officials of the board even got to speak to Jibril himself.

When the student eventually died, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology immediately facilitated the transportation of his remains alongside his mother and brother who were sponsored to nurse him. This was done as urgently as possible in line with the Islamic injunctions on funeral and in order for the deceased student to be given befitting burial as ordained by Islam.

The foregoing has shown the level of concern and commitment the Kano State Government has shown on this unfortunate happening, contrary to the falsehood peddled since the death of Jibril. Indeed, no one can rescue a soul whose time is up but for sure the government has done its extreme best to help Jibril and his family in their hours of need.

Kano State Government has so far paid a total sum of $27,474 (Twenty seven thousand, four hundred and seventy four dollars) to settle the medical bills of late Jibril and other related expenses.

All that was done, of course, was backed by finances and the government did not hesitate in releasing all necessary funds for treatment and other needs for the late Jibril. His school was up to its responsibility by paying up the initial bills for emergency care before contacting the government. Immediately the government came in it paid up the bills accrued by the school in giving the early care and continued from there till the end.

With all this effort on the government’s side I wonder why anyone would go and manufacture conjectures about neglect or whatever in this case. It is nothing less than inhumanity for anyone to cease the grief of a family and turn it into a political mischief trick, which is what happened in this incidence.

May the soul of Jibril find repose in the nicest of Jannah. May Allah comfort his family, ameen.‎

Lets face the truth

Belly and body Fat is the number 1 health problem most women battle in Nigeria and very few knows exactly what to do about their belly fat but they always wish they can reduce the fat and look good in clothes.

The sad but honest truth is that many diets and supplements can actually cause you to GAIN weight instead of losing it?

The reason is because they can severely restrict the amount of food you’re consuming, how often you’re eating, how many calories you get, and how much fat is in your diet.

Constantly depriving yourself of the things and foods you enjoy most may have worse effect than a positive effect on your body.

Restricting your calorie intake too much or not eating often enough can actually cause your body to enter “starvation mode”.

And If the body thinks it isn’t getting enough food, it thinks there may be a famine occurring.  The body’s natural reaction to famine is to store as much fat as possible, and to hold on to the fat it has.

If you eat so little that your body goes into starvation mode, it will become increasingly difficult to lose weight.  The longer you restrict food, and the fewer calories you consume, the more desperately it will hold on to the fat it has stored.

In some cases, you may even start to gain weight as the body tries to store up as much fat as possible to help you survive the famine!
That is why i created this Free 7 days Belly Fatloss Coaching Program.

Militants attacks convoy of ogun state deputy govornor, Yetunde Onanuga

Suspected militants yesterday engaged the security team of the deputy governor of Ogun state, Yetunde Onanuga, in a gun battle at Akoka Ebute area of Ibafo in Obafemi-Owode Local government area of the state. Onanuga had gone to the community to carry out an assessment of the damage done to the community by the suspected militants last week, when she was attacked.

Her security team where greeted with heavy gunshots which lasted for about 30 minutes. Fortunately, no casualty was recorded and Onanuga was able to leave the place unhurt.

Reacting to the incident, secretary to the government of Ogun state, Taiwo Adeoluwa, expressed concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the state

“It is a thing of regret that things have gone so bad in our country; at this level, the teams led by the deputy governor of the state were not able‎ to have access to a part of our state. It means that without mincing words, the federal government needs to get involved in this. This is something that is beyond the capacity of the police. We need military task force like the one we have in Niger Delta; it’s necessary and desirable.‎ As we can see in Elepete, Igbo-Olomu and Imagbon, nothing can be compared with the violence here in Ibafo.”he said

Fleeing Bokoharams and terrorists now disguised as vigilante and hunters - DHQ

Defence Headquarters on Monday said it has discovered that Boko Haram terrorists fleeing from Sambisa Forest now disguise as vigilantes and hunters in order to evade arrest. Below is the statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Bri.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, in Abuja:

"Following the coordinated military offensive against the remnants of Boko Haram Terrorists in Sambisa forest, the fleeing terrorists now disguise as vigilantes or hunters to evade easy detection. The terrorists, after being smoked out of Sambisa forest, in their desperation to wreak havoc on innocent Nigerians and to remain relevant, devised a new tactics of dressing like vigilantes or hunters to deceive unsuspecting members of the public of their true identity.
The case of Kuda-Kaya village in Madadali community of Adamawa State where a group of Boko Haram terrorists, dressed like vigilantes, opened fire on elated people during a ceremony readily come to mind.
The general public is hereby advised to be wary of unsubscribed services or presence of vigilantes or hunters in their neighbourhood in order not to ignorantly harbour killer gang in their midst. Members of the public are also advised to be security conscious, at all times, and report promptly to security agencies of any suspicious persons or group of persons in their community or raise alarm, where necessary"

I love my husband but I can't stop cheating on him because am hooked up on the attention

Read the agony aunt letter shared on UK Sun below...
I have just had a brief dead-end affair with a guy in my office. The sex was OK but it’s better at home with the man I love. I cheat on my husband again and again. I wish I could stop but I can’t. My colleague is one of those guys who seems to like being at work more than being at home.

He’s 42 and married with kids, but a terrible flirt. He’s up for a drink after work every night of the week.

I know what he’s like but he knows how to flatter and made me feel good. There’s a black hole inside me that shouts out for love and attention — whoever it’s from.

We went for a drink at the end of the day and that drink led to three or four more.

He said he had to go back to the office to pick up some files. I went with him and then we got kissing and ended up having sex on the floor.

The next week we did it again, and the week after that. Then I said it must stop. He didn’t seem overly bothered when I said, “Enough is enough”.

I’ve been with my husband for eight years. He’s 36 and I’m 34.

We have two lovely girls and I love him a lot, but I’ve cheated on him more than a dozen times since we got together.

He deserves so much better than me and I so hate behaving like this but it’s like I have no self-control.

I know my husband is faithful to me and the guilt eats away at me constantly. I wish I could tell him the truth just to make me feel better but I’m scared that he wouldn’t forgive me. I’m afraid that he’d leave.

I don’t want to keep on this way any more — but I do it again and again. I feel out of control.

'There's now a govt within Buhari's govt who've seized the apparatus of executive powers to pursue their nefarious agenda' - Saraki

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, were today arraigned before an Abuja High Court over their alleged complicity in forgery of the Senate Standing Rules. The two lawmakers who took turns and pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge preferred against them by the federal government, were granted bail and met the conditions set before leaving the court premises. Saraki has now released a statement regarding the case. Read it after the cut...

Statement on Commencement of Trial at FCT High Court

Today we the leaders of the Nigerian Senate reiterate our innocence against the charges filed by the Attorney General of the Federal Government of Nigeria at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on the allegations of forgery of the Senate Standing Rules document.

In our view, the charges filed by the Attorney General represent a violation of the principle of the Separation of Powers between the Executive Branch and the Legislative Branch as enshrined in our Constitution. Furthermore, it is farcical to allege that a criminal act occurred during Senate procedural actions and the mere suggestion demonstrates a desperate overreach by the office of the Attorney General. These trumped up charges is only another phase in the relentless persecution of the leadership of the Senate

This misguided action by the Attorney General begs the question, how does this promote the public interest and benefit the nation? At a time when the whole of government should be working together to meet Nigeria’s many challenges, we are once again distracted by the Executive Branch’s inability to move beyond a leadership election among Senate peers. It was not an election of Senate peers and Executive Branch participants.

Over the past year the Senate has worked to foster good relations with the Executive Branch. It is in all of our collective interests to put aside divisions and get on with the nation’s business. We risk alienating and losing the support of the very people who have entrusted their national leaders to seek new and creative ways to promote a secure and prosperous Nigeria. As leaders and patriots, it is time to rise above partisanship and to move forward together.

However, what has become clear is that there is now a government within the government of President Buhari who have seized the apparatus of Executive powers to pursue their nefarious agenda.

This latest onslaught on the Legislature represents a clear and present danger to the democracy Nigerians fought hard to win and preserve. The suit filed on behalf of the Federal government suggests that perhaps some forces in the Federal Republic have not fully embraced the fact that the Senate’s rules and procedures govern how the legislative body adjudicates and resolves its own disputes.

Let it be abundantly clear, both as a citizen and as a foremost Legislator, I will continue to rise above all the persecution and distraction that have been visited on me. In the words of Martin Luther King Junior, “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at a time of challenge and controversy”.

I will remain true and committed to the responsibilities that my citizenship and my office impose on me. Without doubt, the highest of those responsibilities is the steadfast refusal to surrender to the subversion of our democracy and the desecration of the Senate. This is a cross I am prepared to carry. If yielding to the nefarious agenda of a few individuals who are bent in undermining our democracy and destabilising the Federal government to satisfy their selfish interests is the alternative to losing my personal freedom, let the doors of jails be thrown open and I shall be a happy guest.

Signed
Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, CON
President, Senate of the Federal Republic

Kemi Adeosun says no going back on suspended Special Overtime Allowance for Ministry for Finance workers

Last week, civil servants in the Ministry of Finance staged a protest at the Ministry's secretariat where they called for the sack of the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun over the non-payment of their special overtime allowance. The workers barricaded the entrance to the ministry and accused the Minister of stopping their allowance.

Speaking on Channels TV this morning, Adeosun said the suspension of the Special Overtime Allowance for the workers had been stopped by her predecessor, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
"For about 11 years or so, the Federal Inland Revenue Service who are self funded, get 4% of what they collect as cost of collection. They don't get their salaries from the Federation account and every year they allocate a bonus and part of that bonus was given to staff of the office of the Accountant General, Ministry of Finance and Budget of the Federation. It has always been contentious but its always been paid. In 2014, my predecessor then told them this is the last time it would be paid. It was N800 million at the time. It was communicated to the Union that the allowance wasn't in their scheme of service. Its not an official payment that can be justified and so it is not going to continue. So when I was sworn in in 2015, the first issue that was brought to me was this and this year, the claim was N1.2 billion. I consulted with the Head of Service, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Consulted with the Presidency, checked the legalities. There is no provision for it in the budget for FIRS. There is no provision for it in our budget. It is a customary payment rather than an entitlement. I began to engage with the leaderships of the unions around this and explained to them that it wouldn't be possible to continue. I think people are just disappointed because they have always had it. I took time to explain to the staff that what you are legally entitled to you would always get but what is not a legal entitlement, a customary entitlement, can't be paid"she said
